Asset Integrity: 3 Reasons Why It's Your Business Too!
Where Do We Work?
Is it at an Operator company such as, the Petroleum Company of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd., BP Trinidad & Tobago L.L.C., the National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd., Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad and Tobago Ltd., Shell Trinidad Ltd., or BHP Billiton Trinidad & Tobago Ltd.?
Or, is it at a Service company such as, Halliburton Trinidad Ltd., Weatherford Trinidad Ltd., Massy Wood Group Ltd., Fluor Daniel South America Ltd., WorleyParsons Trinidad Ltd., or Lloyd’s Register Group Ltd.?
Reason #1 : Simplicity To Achieve Complexity.
The unwavering value of Asset Integrity can be simplified as follows:
1. Assets = Business value.
2. Limited (or zero) Assets = Limited (or zero) Business value.
3. Limited (or zero) Business value = Negative Impact on Companies, Families and Countries.
4. Higher Asset Integrity = Higher Happiness for Everybody.
Therefore, we all have a contributing role and responsibility to maintain and develop Asset Integrity. Depending on our contractual duties, different personnel will need to have a high degree or a low degree of applicable expertise and activity.
Reason #2 : “We Jamming Still!”
We want to focus and have efficient and effective productivity throughout the Oil & Gas Industry’s Supply Chain. That is, at Exploration, Production, Processing, Transportation, Refining and Distribution. Challenges continue to emerge in the industry, whilst we enhance innovativeness to overcome those challenges. So, if we want to be “jamming still”, or in other words, want to maintain productivity and the key performance indicators (KPIs), we all need to “chip” in little by little. Everybody knows the old saying, “take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.”
Reason #3 : Engineering & Operations May Have Limitations.
Firstly, allow me to reiterate that there is a difference between being aware of the surrounding facilities, and being multi-skilled with different expertise. Also, there is a conspicuous difference between being the personnel for highlighting the defective assets, and being the personnel for executing the repairs of the defective assets.
One of the regulatory requirements of a Process Plant, is inspection. These inspections can be done in the time periods, as per the stipulations of the organization’s technical practices and asset integrity management programs, in compliance to the applicable industry codes and standards. For instance, API 510 for pressure vessel inspection; API RP 14C for analysis, design, installation and testing of basic surface safety systems for offshore production platforms; or API Specification 6A for wellhead and christmas tree equipment.
We all know how dynamic our environment is, and especially acquainted with the fact that an anomaly can occur at any time. Take for instance, personnel who may be constructing scaffolding around a wellhead, they can occasionally glimpse the Well Annuli pressure gauges to see if there is any significant change while they are working there for the next few days. Remember, that guy “Murphy” (Murphy’s law) whom nobody likes, can decide to cause a defect, preventing the Control Room Operator from detecting trends of the Well Annuli pressure changes which has a potential for a catastrophic outcome. This is an example of a basic way, that all personnel can contribute to Asset Integrity. As well, there are administrative process tools such as S.T.O.P. (Safety Training Observation Program) cards, incident reporting, and discussions during safety meetings or job site meetings.
“Hold Dem and Wok Dem.”
There was an occasion when I was an Acting Operations Team Leader offshore, and someone asked me very confusingly, “why you taking this thing so serious man?” Firstly, I was surprised that he was not serious because the Process Plant belonged to a major contributor in the Trinidad & Tobago’s Energy industry, then I passionately expressed how everything on the platform can affect other personnel, the company, the country and our loved ones at home.
Asset Integrity is vital for all personnel. Let us all support each other as we seek to obtain jobs, fulfill jobs, then hold our duties, and work them!
Thank You for reading the reiteration of these 3 reasons, of why Asset Integrity is everybody's business.
